Introducing Chris Masterjohn Lite

Could drinking alcohol be contributing to your allergies or histamine intolerance?

When my allergies started going nuts in Greece this summer, I was drinking more alcohol. Alcohol impairs the clearance of histamine *and* competes with histamine to be cleared itself. So it could make your allergies worse or contribute to histamine intolerance if you have it.

  1. So how does this work with say 2 drinks in the evening and you’re allergies are bothering you the next morning / afternoon. Wouldn’t the alcohol have cleared your system by say 2AM and then you would be back in control of your histamines?

Or is there some longer term factor at play?

    1. Ethanol has a half life of 4.5 hours, and something is “gone” in 4-5 half-lives. So it stays in your system for about a day. I also don’t know the time course of the suppression of DAO, nor how long the uncleared histamine would affect you for, so I think the next morning seems reasonable.

  2. Thanks for all the good histamine information Chris. Will you be discussing in the future the effect of exercise on histamine?
